Write to Your MP

Writing to your MP is one of the most powerful actions you can take. MPs have direct access to DWP ministers and can formally request that enforcement action is suspended while your case is investigated. Your letter could make an immediate difference — and it strengthens the campaign's push for systemic change.

What the template covers
How to raise your personal CMS case with your MP and request urgent intervention — including suspension of any Deduction from Earnings Order while your complaint is investigated
The five reform points for Parliament — written, evidenced, and ready to send
Specific parliamentary questions to ask your MP to submit — on the gross income calculation, the 12-hour education threshold, and CMS's failure to collect data on the deaths of paying parents
Placeholder sections for your own case details — easy to personalise in under 20 minutes
References to the relevant legislation — Child Support Act 1991, Child Maintenance and Other Payments Act 2008, Child Support (Enforcement) Act 2023
Why it works
MPs receive thousands of letters. A well-structured letter with specific requests — case references, dates, and named legislation — gets read and acted on. A vague letter often doesn't.
Your MP can write directly to DWP ministers. That letter gets a response within days — the same complaint through the normal channels can take months.
Every MP who receives one of these letters is a potential parliamentary ally. When enough MPs have been written to, someone tables a question in the Commons. That changes things.
